This is Lucy

She just looks like a Lucy to me. I am having so much fun drawing the girls for the upcoming online class. I am even teaching myself a few new things. It's really fun for these girls to emerge as you draw them and each one will have a little personality. Lucy happens to be one that looks you right in the eye.
Most of my girls have a name and the name just pops into my head when I see them. She looks to be about 7 or 8 years old I think. Hi Lucy!

Stars in their eyes...

I haven't painted any girls in so long I thought I would see if I still could paint some. They are mostly watercolor with some acrylic and punchanella thrown in. If you look closely, they really do have stars in their eyes.

Sometimes I just like to peruse all of my old sketch books and I find things that I did before the days of the copic marker. This is one of these drawings so I decided just to color her in with a bit of enhancement with my black markers and stamps. I actually had to redo the Scripture with one of my hand lettered fonts that I made and have really enjoyed using. It's like my own writing---but as a typeface. I made it in Fontifier for $10.

A flash from the past...

This was a little drawing that I did in my sketch book a while back that was just in pencil so I decided to print it out on paper and paint it with watercolor. I had forgotten that I had even drawn these girls. I like the simplicity of the girls I used to draw. The faces are colored with copic markers. I enjoy using the copics to shade faces and I need to do more of it because...it's fun! I am not sure who these three are. They don't look much like sisters and the girl on the right might be a little older but I did name them..from left to right...Lily, Becca, and Claire. They are sweet girls who love each other.

Looking better...

I used Shiva oil sticks on her and I think the 3/4 face is looking a little better. I am still on Lesson One of the Suzi videos but I need lots of practice on the 3/4 view. I think I will go and get a wig mannequin which Suzi says helps. Anything that helps, I'll do!

Church Girls

Ok, I confess, I drew these in church but I was listening, I promise. I'm sure that people are thinking I am so spiritual taking all those notes! Well, confession is good for the soul. I think I will paint these girls on a canvas or just print them off and practice painting them or use colored pencils ala Suzi. Hey, also, guess what I did yesterday? I painted some Poppies! Remember my Poppy phase? It was nice to see that I could still paint one! I should blog it. Maybe I will. Have a great Thursday. Tomorrow morning I am having part two done of my implant tooth surgery. UGh! Six more months until I get the tooth. At least it is on the side but still shows if I smile too big. I am getting so tired of wearing my "party tooth flipper." Sorry, that's more details than you needed.
I lost a tooth while I was in London many many many years ago while in college ( I only needed a root canal but no such luck there) and the old bridge finally collapsed so---it was time for the implant.

I will post the Youtube video of the "Red Journal" on Friday because I might not be able to create any art. Unfortunately, they have to put me under. Not looking forward to it.

Misty Mawn Class and journal page

I think that Misty's class is going to be really good. After taking Suzi Blu's class and now taking Misty's I should be able to improve my faces. I can't show you the profile drawing, though. Oh my goodness...it was REALLY bad!

Painting the girls

I have been taking Jane DesRosier (Gritty Jane)'s online class.

This ethnic-looking girl is painted starting from black, adding darker values and using blue/ green tones for the contours of her face to create the shape. The lighter tones are added. So now I know how she achieves the wonderful depth she gets in her paintings and with her faces. Since the class was only several hours long, I decided to do her class this weekend. It really will take some practice but I want to learn all the different ways to paint a face since that is what I love to do the best.

The painting below was also starting from black. I painted her just before Christmas before I had even signed up for Jane's class. I thought it was rather interesting that I started this one from black then that's what Jane taught in her class. This girl actually started out to be an angel with a halo which turned into a hat and wings that turned into trees. She looks a bit miffed because I think she actually wanted to be an angel.

Aspire to be True--Journal Page

Doodling in the journal sometimes brings unexpected things. Like, I didn't expect that her doodle hair would look like snails in her hair! But I am loving the copics for the face and I have finally gotten the colors that I think work for faces. This is in journal #7 or 8. I have that many floating around. I am a journal junkie, I admit it but my favorite one right now is the one I journaled in the other day which is this one.

This is Miranda

Why Miranda? I don't know, she just looked like a Miranda to me. What is Miranda doing? I think she is listening to someone very intently and politely but does not agree with what she is hearing. But Miranda is very savvy and smart and she will give her opinion in the most eloquent and inoffensive way and she herself will not be offended by the other's viewpoint.

Maybe I can have a little story about my girls. There always seems to always be something in their eyes that tells a story. I just need to bring it forth.

I woke up yesterday morning thinking about coloring a face with colored pencils so that is the first thing I did. I had some face tone colors so here she is...Miranda in the morning! I like her hair and wish mine looked like this. I think the fun of drawing faces is that each one is different although slightly the same. They could all be cousins or something. more girl friends...

Monica has graciously let me take her "The Parfume of Life" class".

I am really enjoying it although I painted this girl before I saw how she blends her acrylics! Can't wait to try it. I am sure it really won't be quite as easy as she makes it look!

The top sketch is from the journal as I was watching TV. I think I will try and paint the top one too---with acrylics and maybe even Copics. Can't spray her though--I am afraid the air compressor is not quite that precise!

Journal Junkin'

Just a little journal junkin'. Some of it is left over paint on my pallet and  one of the images is a fabric painting and two are a fabric print.  Does anybody feel guilty about all the journals they have going?  Maybe one day I will complete one of them.  Some are half full---and one of these days maybe I should write something in one. I love to see journals with art work that has writing in it. Don't know why I have a writing block about that. Just crazy that way I guess. Love the way Carol Sloan does it. She is going to Birmingham, AL, for the DJ Pettit workshop. How lucky is she??????

More Griddy Art

I like grids---it's in boxes and I am happy with boxes---I love staying in the boxes--I love the order of boxes--it's so boxie!---so you can probably guess, I love to sometimes stay in the box--and then write outside the box.  Yep-I sure do.

Girls In the Small Journal

Make sure you always take your small Molskine or whatever journal you have with you at all times--especially when you waiting in the Dr's office. The time flies by and you don't think about being at the dr's office and before you know it they call you and your's done. I actually like using a regular pencil although I do like using a 2or 3B. But usually it is so messy and smuggie that I would rather just use the regular HB. Have a wonderful day!

Two Girls in the Journal

These are in my Moleskine---(I heard this was pronounced Mol-ska-na) Sounds better than Molskin---anyway, the girl on the left is colored with Graphitint pencils and the girl on the right is Shiva. Everything gives a different look-it just depends on the look you are going for. I find that drawing faces is relaxing to me. I draw them when I am engaged in my my other addictions---Americal Idol and Dancing with the Stars. I am still liking the Shiva the best for the faces. If you add Gamsol then you can blend them. Then sometimes in my journal I add acrylic over the Shiva for more texture for the hair. Actually the Shiva police would probably come and get me for this but it's not for sale so---anything goes in the Mol-ska-na!

In the Monskine Sketchbook Journal

I painted her with acrylic and she doesn't look as smooth as when I use Shiva oil sticks. I did smooth her cheeks a bit with the Shiva. I bought a hair stying magazine to get some new styles for my girls. This one is not having a very good hair day. Every time I draw a new girl I try and make her look different but as I look at all of them they all look like they are related---some look like sisters and some like cousins. One even looks like my mother did as a young girl. The girls are the most relaxing art that I do. I guess it's because they all become my little friends. I think her name is Crystal--bet you can tell why---her eyes.
