Value study

Ok, I did the value study. It is on a 12 x 12 canvas board and I actually drew this vase from a still life! (I now have several bald spots on my head!) Doing a black and white value study is extremely difficult, I thought. I think that the hard thing for me in painting is seeing the slight changes in the values. I think that is why I have leaned more toward whimsical paintings where the values really don't matter all that much. Well, I should correct that statement...values really do matter in every painting but when it's whimsical I guess it less noticeable and less likely to be hokey. What is a hokey painting? I can't really explain it--I just know I don't want to paint hokey paintings.

okay, if it helps when I saw this on my sidebar I thought it was a photo. Yes, it's a photo of your painting, but I mean a photo of an urn!! Not hokey!!!!! Not, not, not!!!!

I'm with Mary, it took me a second when I saw it on your blog to realize it was a canvas! I'd say the outcome was worth the hair loss :-) I feel like I'm seeing your amazing talent develop in new ways and directions as you challenge yourself to try new things. Thank you for sharing the journey with us, it's inspiring.

You did a great job on this Martha! We had to do value studies also with the lessons I'm taking. It is hard to grasp for sure. We started with gray scales, then had to do blue and then red. It was difficult to do, but I definitely learned a lot from it. The urn turned out great...yes it looks like a photo. You should be proud of yourself! Studying values will help you in all of your artwork down the road. Its all about shading, form and depth. Looks like you've got it!

Martha,

As usual, I am blown away by your art.

This is stunning and I know how difficult it must have been, but it was surely worth all the hair pulling because it is a masterpiece.

Wow!!!!

Martha,

You may enjoy painting the whimsical, but you are a true artist and you have proven it by this value study. Keep painting the whimsical, because I just love your style.

Wow Martha, this looks amazingly real!
I know exactly what you mean about seeing the shadows and light in black and white easier. Light and shadow is something I struggle with and holds me back sometimes. I can see where making yourself do a black and white study is helpful.

Wow, this painting shows just how gifted you are--to get the shadows and light like this so much so, that it appears to be a photo--amazing!
