This actually started off as an experiment to see if I could write with white gouache over the inks that I had sprayed on these watercolor pages. I found that the ink rewets and bleeds into the white--(or vice verse) so this was after I had put a coat of clear gesso over the ink to seal it. I started writing was happy to see that it stayed white. Yay for clear gesso!!! These were pages sprayed for the Dina Wakley journal which I will blog after I sew it up. It was a very fun class.
I agree--I love clear gesso--I discovered it from Suzi's class. Great page journal page--and the colors!!
ReplyDeleteYou know I tried clear gesso and did not like it. I think it was the grit in it. I'll have to play around with it a little more I think.

I posted yesterday about using clear gesso for the first time and was distressed to find how sandy it is... not good for drawing on with a quality brush. It does a good job of sealing, though and since you had such success with it I'll try again... but maybe for a different purpose.

ReplyDeleteLove the purple in these pages, Martha. I use clear gesso too, it's wonderful! I've also used fixative sprays before and they work the same way, without the grit.
ReplyDeleteNice work! I'm curious: is clear gesso sticky or not? I like to finish my journal pages with matte gel medium, but it does tend to stick together if I don't put anything between the pages. I solve this sometimes with a very light watercolour wash. I like the surface of my collages to be the same, because it makes the penwork I do over it more consistent. Normal gesso doesn't really stick, so maybe clear gesso is the answer to my sticky problem? Like to hear your thoughts?

Clear gesso is a staple in my studio - along with tinted gessos that I make up myself. I know you can buy tinted gesso - but it's more fun to me to make my own.
I'm inspired to try the Maya Mists now!
