Starting to paint with oils
I am trying to get familiar with the oil paint and find out how it behaves and blends. I think that so far I love working with oils because the brushes clean out so easily and off my hands and clothes too. I like it because you have several days to look at it and see if it needs anything else and actually your pallet says wet too so you can tweak until your heart's content (at least for a few days if necessary). I am using Windsor Newton water soluble oils now because that's what I have. They behave just like regular oils which I will also try and see which I like better although I hear that there is really no difference. I am painting from a reference photograph from a website called Daily Painters. The original image is from an artist named Linda Apple. I love the way she paints. Of course I would not sell any of these that I have painted since it's just practice for me but when I get to a point where I use my own photographs then I will sell them. I am trying to paint everyday so I should have another painting to show every day.
a new art venture can be so exhilarating....look like your doing great....have fun...i have not tried the water soluble oils yet...i painted in oils years ago..the "smelly" kind...
ReplyDeleteHi Martha, Your oils are great-I can tell you're having FUN. Also I love your spray painted backgrounds!
ReplyDeleteWow you are doing great with the oils, the pears came out so well. I heard oils were harder to use but you make it sound so easy. You make me want to try some. Thanks for being such an inspiration!
ReplyDeleteLovely pears : ) Good luck with the oils.
ReplyDeleteYou know Martha, you are one talented lady....No matter what you use to made art, it's good....
ReplyDeleteI so admire all your different ways of creating and look forward to seeing what you are up to at any given time...
Hugs and Blessings
You're going great for just starting with oils! I've always shied off of oils for some reason. I look forward to seeing what you come up with each day!
ReplyDeletethe big difference between the two kinds of oils is the clean-up
ReplyDeletebeautiful pears
Martha these look great, I love how the stems create a heart!!!
ReplyDeleteoils have such a wonderful look to them. my daughter loves the look oils produce, but did not have the patience to wait for them to dry. I would like to see her work in them though.
I see you went stretch too!!
ReplyDeleteI think I really like the bigger size. :)
You have been busy! I admire you determination in challenging yourself to branch out. Nice job with the oils, I've not taken that plunge yet. Looking forward to seeing all you create.
ReplyDeleteI took a few oil painting classes last year and really loved them, though my pics didn't turn out quite as lovely as yours.
ReplyDeleteMartha, love the poppy and your new header. Oils can be fun, although I have not really used them much since college. Your work is wonderful. There must be something about pears, I see alot of them as artwork. I did one in pencil for EDM in May. Love that you are trying new things.
ReplyDeleteLove your pears!! I haven't ever painted with oils before, but I love the look of them. Looks like you are off to a good start and I am sure with a lot of practice, you'll master them.
ReplyDeleteI bought DVD's from KC Willis on her fabric collages and I'm WILD about them! So I've been off on that tangent for awhile now. I hope to combine my painting with the fabrics.
I think I need a bigger studio. Now I am trying to figure out where to keep all my fabrics and laces......lol!!!
Have a great week Martha!
hugs, Sue
ps..love the new header!
what a great pair of pears. Oils are running smothly for you, painting looks great.
ReplyDeleteNever heard of water soluble oils before. Interesting.. Do they take long to dry?
Oh, there's something about oil paintings--I love these!--I don't think that I could have the patience though.
ReplyDeleteOh, Martha!
ReplyDeleteI love your successful efforts in oils!
You've GOT it, kid!
After you feel comfortable with them, try a still life from your own table. (Don't want to rely on photos forever; you're already working on a higher level than that, my talented friend :-)
I don't know why, but oils scare me! I guess when you haven't tried something before you just need to take the plunge and be brave.
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed Martha with your pears in oil. As always your creation here looks great.
If you have a moment tomorrow, stop by my blog because I am having a GIVEAWAY.

Gorgeous!! I love that you're embracing a new medium. (and I love your new, Poppy banner too!)
ReplyDeleteMartha, you and Lori are taking the class too?? How fun!!!!
ReplyDeleteI just realized you have a new blog banner. very pretty. I love these pears, my first thought was "Aww, they are in love". :) I like the way the white gives them a light reflection. Have fun!!
ReplyDeleteMartha, you talented woman, You're on your way to painting from life, so keep on keeping on! You'll be painting "real" stuff in no time.
ReplyDeleteHugs~ DJ
you did a great job. Have fun on your new adventure.. everything you do is so wonderful!
ReplyDeletesee I knew you would do great! To answer you question about the Giclee print the paper is Somerset Velvet. I use a print service in town.
ReplyDeleteWonderful creations in this and the previous posts!
ReplyDeleteLove your pears. I also like hearing how the paints perform. Do you like the oils better than acrylics for the same kind of painting? I've been trying this with acrylics and they keep drying on me.
ReplyDeleteHi Martha!
ReplyDeleteI have never tried water soluable oil paints...only the regular kind...and the fumes bother me too much of the linseed oil and turpentine...so I shy away from using them...and go to acrylics instead...or watercolour of course!
maybe I should try water based oils sometime!
keep painting everyday...you're painting skills are wonderful now...i know painting more will bring you to a level you will even be satisfied with!
lol
ciao bella
