Now this girl is getting a bit better. Maybe I should paint her.
I can't figure out how to make them not pout. I am probably not lining them up right. No pouting allowed!
I just need to practice, practice--practice!!!
The 3/4 view of the face really is quite a challenge to draw but as Suzi says, the hands have memory so they have to learn. I know that she is completely right about that because to learn calligraphy your hands have to memorize the letterforms. So I am determined to learn the 3/4 view face because I love this angle for the face. I know it will get easier because the front view has gotten easier. And as for the profile---forget about it!!!!

I love the pouty look! I drew my first face last night--well I wouldn't call it my first, but one that is starting to look better. I'm having trouble with the nose too, and the mouth was a little tricky too--might as well throw the eyes in there too :) I didn't watch the result show last night--I will today. Your right--Lee was great and I also really liked Crystal--she's a natural.
ReplyDeleteYou make me laugh Martha, I think your girls are quite interesting, they have character!
ReplyDeleteI think they are both beautiful and I see the progress with the second. You have a great attitude about learning and practice! I need to have that attitude..I get frustrated when I can't do it right away and I give up...NOT what one should do! What if as a baby I didn't 'get' the whole walking thing? I'd still be crawling around on the floors!
ReplyDeletePractice, preactice, practice {That's for ME..you've already embrased that ethic!}
Your practice is paying off, love the second one and the first one is adorable and you gave her personality with attitude!
ReplyDeleteOo - I think you are doing a great job. Wish I could take that class, it sounds super interesting especially for doing portraits ... I agree everything takes practice...you just have to try and try again! Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteHi Martha, this face angle is a tricky one. The origin of man by leonardo davinci Shows about measurment and the perfect code.
ReplyDeleteThe face holds these rules also.
Draw the middle lines as on a front face and a line down where you wish the face to be looking. Keep to the lines with a little over for nose.
If you are having trouble take some photos of someone or yourself at side angles. Print the photo of stick it to you window for light transfering through to you plain paper and trace the image.
Not that you would use this image but you can draw from it. This will give you an idea of different angles. I was taught this at art college. I don't use this now but it certainly helps get your eyes to see the lines instead of the images. I don't know what it is our minds always exagerates or imagines around what we see when actually we cannot see all.
I do love her face, she is very beautiful.
Hope this info helps!
Hugs!
Julie
Wow Martha. These are really good.
ReplyDeleteMarthy don't be discouraged! You are getting it!! I can see a change from the first on yesterday to second one posted today.
ReplyDeleteYes the nose is a bit long but she's got LOADS of character! I'm making a Madonna and she's turning out like Cher, and that won't do at all!
ReplyDeleteI love how you have conversations with your girls that you paint!!!! It gives us insight into their great personality.
ReplyDeletei am reminded of what i once heard of - Wabi-Sabi: The Beauty of Imperfection (japanese culture). but if you do not want your next girl to pout, how about trying lining up the edge of the mouth with the tip of the nose.
