Knobby Art with a Grungy Attitude

Here is one more 4x4 Knobby Art that has brass tacks (ouch, I hit my thumb and it hurt) and some wire. I love working with wire although I am new to it but it's fun.  The bird image is also
a potential Knobette. I wrote the calligraphy with gouache(opaque watercolor) and it slid all around and didn't adhere very well because of the mat medium so I had to use my .005 Pigma pen with my magnifying loop and clean it up. I wonder something---I wonder if I add some clear gesso first in the place where I want to write (which would provide a grittier surface) would the lettering with gouache go on better?? hummmm...I would be a happy girl if that worked. Anyway, I took a deep breath and posted the Knobette up on Etsy.

  2. Love this piece!! I think that the calligraphy looks fine- we are our own worst critic!!! If you left the area where you are gopiong to add the writing free of medium, that would help. There is also something called clear gesso- the gritty ground without the pigment- that might be your answer!!!
I love the girls face peeking out form the background!! Is this one of your painted birds???
I am sure that it will sell!!
    Hugs!

  4. I'm always drawn to your artwork that includes your fabulous lettering! Great work Martha. I think you're correct - mixing the medium with clear gesso might help the gouache from skating.

  8. Have you ever used pumice? It's one of those calligrapher's tricks when the ink/paint pools up. It may help to lightly rub some on where you would like to letter. Just a thought.

  9. Oh my, I think that knobby with the grunge attitude is my favorite yet. I love it! I made a bunch of paper beads a while ago and recently used them on a swap piece. They are fun aren't they? I like your bird, very pretty.
